Social Narrative Staying in Class – Visual Cue

If you have students who run out or leave the room without permission, this resource is for you! This is a social narrative created for students with autism or other developmental disabilities to teach the concept of staying in class to stay safe!

This is a one page social story with approximately 10 lines of text, with accompanying pictures. Visuals are great ways to teach skills to early learners.

This story is written from the student’s perspective explaining how:

• I can stay in class
• This is a rule to keep me safe
• I can ask for a walk or a break
• I can do something else in the classroom until it is time for a break
• I will be proud of myself when I follow the rules to stay safe

Repeating these expectations to your learner can help teach the skills necessary to stay in class which is a vital safety skill! Remember that behavior change does not happen overnight. Practice, practice, practice this skill using modeling and positive reinforcement!
