Description

If you work with learners with special needs who have trouble hearing “NO” at times, this resource is for you! This is a social narrative for accepting no visual cue created for students with autism or other disabilities to teach the concept that “sometimes the answer is no.” This would also be a perfect for preschool age students!

  • This is a one page social narrative with approximately ten lines of text, with accompanying pictures. Visual cues are a great way to teach skills to early learners.
  • The story explains that it is ok to feel mad or sad when you hear “no”, and that there are skills that can replace this anger (ex, take a deep breath).
  • Reading the story to your learner when they are calm can teach the concept of “no.” Once your learner begins to show signs of understanding, you can begin to use the visual as a reference when they ask for something unavailable.
  • Remember that behavior change does not happen overnight. Practice, practice, practice this skill using modeling and positive reinforcement!
