Understanding the Importance of Self-Care for ABA Staff

In the world of special education and ABA therapy, the line between dedication and burnout can blur quickly. We’re not merely teaching lessons or managing behaviors; we’re providing essential support that shapes lives. Recognizing this, it’s vital to acknowledge our own needs and limitations. Just as we advocate for the well-being of our students, we must extend that same care to ourselves.

Recognizing signs of burnout

First and foremost, let’s learn to recognize the warning signs of burnout. Feeling constantly exhausted, experiencing cynicism or detachment from work, and a decline in job performance are all red flags. It is completely natural to express frustration after a difficult day, but if you find these negative feelings hard to shake, this can be a huge sign of burnout. Moreover, physical symptoms like headaches, insomnia, or changes in appetite can also indicate excessive stress. Research shows that self-care strategies can improve work–life balance and reduce burnout among ABA educators.

Strategies for self-care for ABA staff

  1. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Focus on visual cues as we do in our classroom settings! If you have work email on your phone, consider hiding or deleting the app outside of working hours. If you do some of your work from home, designate specific notebooks or even stations in your house for “work” and use other notebooks and areas for personal notes and binging Netflix shows or your other favorite de-stressing activities. Most importantly, carve out time for relaxation, hobbies, and spending quality time with loved ones.

  2. Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily routine. Whether it’s through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or mindful walking, taking moments to center yourself can alleviate stress and promote mental clarity. My favorite app for this purpose is Headspace, but find one that resonates with you!

  3. Seek Support: Build a network of support within your professional community. Connect with fellow ABA professionals, attend support groups or supervision sessions, and engage in peer mentoring to share experiences and gain insights. Find colleagues who also strive to keep a positive work-life balance with whom to surround yourself to practice self-care for ABA staff.

  4. Prioritize Self-Reflection: Regularly reflect on your experiences and emotions. Journaling can be a powerful tool for processing feelings, gaining perspective, and identifying areas for personal growth. In addition to reflecting on past experiences, seek feedback from your colleagues and supervisors. Seeking feedback from colleagues and supervisors can foster a supportive environment where we can gain valuable insights, validate our efforts, and reinforce a sense of belonging, ultimately reducing feelings of burnout.

Whether it’s exercising, art class, or simply taking a relaxing bath, prioritize activities that bring you joy as well as replenish your energy reserves.

In addition to finding ways outside of work to fulfill your mental health, you can take active steps to enjoy your hours on the job as well by trying a practice known as job crafting. I was intrigued when I first heard about this, because I felt like it gave a specific term to something I naturally try to incorporate into my practice.

Job crafting involves proactively reshaping one’s role and responsibilities to better align with personal strengths, passions, and values. In the context of ABA therapy, this might entail identifying areas of particular interest or expertise within the field and seeking opportunities to incorporate them into daily practice. For example, if you have a passion for creativity, you might explore drawing or coloring visual cues to use as part of your behavior intervention plans, while if you’re someone with a knack for digital tools, you could try developing efficient digital data collection systems for your team.

By customizing our roles to better suit our individual preferences and talents, job crafting not only enhances job satisfaction but also fosters a sense of autonomy and fulfillment, contributing to overall well-being and resilience in the demanding environment of the autism classroom.


While working in autism classrooms and ABA therapy, self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity.
